The six-year program of environmental protection was passed by Parliament in 1997. (National Environmental Protection Program), while the planning of the next six-year cycle is underway.
The new law on waste management is effective as of 1st January 2001. The introduction of an environment pollution fee is still being on the agenda and is being considered seriously, but its launch is not expected for a few more years. At present, the most pressing problem is legal harmonization with the EU. The Hungarian government is fully committed to Hungary joining the EU.
