Russell, 1. János Scott, skót technikus, szül. Vale of Clydeban 1808., megh. Londonban 1882 jun. 10. Az edinburgi, st.-andrewsi és glasgowi egyetemeken tanult, aztán mérnök, 1832. Edinburgban a kisérleti fizika tanára, később egy nagy greenocki hajógyár vezetője lett. 1844. Londonba ment és itt néhány nagy gőzöst konstruált (többi közt a Great Eastern hajót). Művei: The modern system of naval architecture for commerce and war (London 1865); Systematic technical education (u. o. 1869).
2. R. Vilmos Howard, angol zsurnaliszta, szül. Lily Valeban (Dublin) 1821 márc. 28. Jogot tanult és ügyvéd lett; 1842 óta a londoni Times tudósítója, 1854-58. ő volt a Times levelezője Krimben és Indiában, 1861-62. az Egyesült-Államokban, 1866. az osztrák fő hadi szálláson, 1870-71. a porosz trónörökös fő hadi szállásán és 1876. a walesi herceget Indiába kisérte. 1858. megalapította a londoni Army and Navy Gazettet. Művei: History of the Crimean war (London 1855-56, 2 köt.); British expedition to the Crimea (u. o. 1857, 1876); My diary in India (u. o. 1860, 2 köt.); Review of Todleben's history of the defence of Sebastopol (u. o. 1864); Canada, its defences, condition and resources (u. o. 1865); Diary in the East tour of the Prince and Princess of Wales (u. o. 1869); My diary during the last great war (u. o. 1873); The prince of Wales' tour: a diary in India etc. (u. o. 1877); Indian mutiny (új kiad. 1884); Hesperothen (1882, 2 köt.); The adventures of Dr. Brady (regény, 1868).
