Art Reproduction

One of the greatest challenges is the high resolution and color-coded digitization of the large size artworks in frame (mainly paintings). We are operating with a cool, up to 150 lux steady illuminating and with a professional auto panorama head. The distortion of one-shot recordings is discontinued by mathematical methods and the images are pasted together according to pixels. With this method we can capture 4-5 meters wide and 2-4 meters tall paintings with up to 300-400 DPI resolution. The never ever seen in depths will be visible, even the smallest brush strokes can be traced. This is much closer as a live view at the exhibition from 2-3 meter distance. It is like analysing the picture with a magnifying glass.

Gigapixel resolution digitization at the Hungarian National Museum

We have developed our own method to effectively filter out the glittering light on the pictures. All this depends on the appropriate lamp setting, adapting them to a specific location. If that was not enough, using a high-quality polar filter ensures getting a glitter-free image. The carefully assembled quality device system (racks, lamps, panorama head, camera, lens, etc.) can be carried easily. The fast installation of this systems allows digitization on the spot, so costly transportation and movement of museum objects can be avoided.

These even more Gpixel high resolution images meet the Google Art project's quality expectations. We use the same devices (like panorama head) and the same software for the shooting. During our work the accuracy in color reproduction is very important. We are using an individual ICC color profile for each image and considering the changing light and environmental conditions.

These high resolution images (similar to maps) are displayed on the Internet with own developed open source tools that can be completely managed, improved and customized. The high-speed, high-resolution display does not require a special workstation, the stunningly detailed and needle sharp pictures can be enjoyed on a standard PC (or even on mobile or tablet).
