Hungary is frequently afflicted by floods. Therefore, the country is to be prepared for water pollution, including cyanide and heavy metal contamination. In the Ministry for Environment, there is a governing body that is authorized to make decisions on the need for interference and is responsible for its control. The Act on Disaster Prevention regulates the practicalities of alarm, information and broadcast systems. A regional alarm system has been established in the Danube region. The legal harmonization of nuclear safety and civil defense to meet European standards is being developed. In 2000 a new law was passed on chemical safety.
