Nemzetközi szó a francia ponton nyomán, ennek forrása a latin ponto, pontonis (‘komp, hajóhíd’), nagyító képzős alak a pons, pontis (‘híd’) szóból. A magyarba német közvetítéssel került. Lásd még pontifex.
