1386-ban tűnik fel. (Urkundenbuch. II. 606.)
1490-ben Zenthgyergh, 1511-ben Zenthgyewrgh, 1587-ben Zentt Gyeergy néven jelentkezik a forrásokban. (C. Suciu: Dicţionar istoric., Urkundenbuch. II. 557, 617, III. 98.)
Neve középkori templomáról tanúskodik, amely Szent György tiszteletére volt szentelve s a településnek is nevet adott.
Későbbi adat nincs sem a templomról, sem a településről, amely Bencenc és Gyalmár vidékén feküdt, „in sede zeredahel”.
