1219-ben Scente néven jelentkezik a forrásokban. (Györffy: Az Árpád-kori. II. 64. C.; C. Suciu: Dicţionar istoric.) 1317-ben Scenta, 1335-ben Ceenthe, 1457-ben Chenthe, 1533-ban Czenthe (C. Suciu: i.m.) formában fordul elő.
Középkori templomáról nincs adat.
Az 1347-ből származó helynevek azonban arról tanúskodnak, hogy katolikus lakói voltak: Olaperdeyfey, Fulniresfey, Oloperdey, Berch, Turmasto, Eykerdey, Kechkeshátfey, Oldolerdez. (Documente. XIV. C., IV. 389–390.)
1603-ban annyira kipusztul, hogy csak 5 lélek marad. (Kádár: Szolnok-Doboka vm. II. 510.)
