Most of the authors discussed in this chapter are ignored by official editorial policy in Hungary; consequently with the exception of a few titles which have been reprinted outside Hungary, none are available in modern edition.
Cécile Tormay: Összes munkái, 12 vols. (1937); in English An Outlaw’s Diary (vol. 1 The Revolution 1923; vol. 2 The Commune, 1923); Stonecrop (1922), and The Old House (1921).
Miklós Surányi: Műveinek emlékkiadása, 15 vols. (1936). Recent edition: Egyedül vagyunk (Buenos Aires, 1963). In English: Women of Naples (N.Y.,1929).
No collected works of Irén Gulácsy have been published. Fekete vőlegények was republished recently (Buenos Aires, 1959).
János Komáromi: Munkái, 28 vols. (1930–8).
Some of Gyula Somogyvári’s works have been reprinted abroad: A Rajna ködbevész (Zürich, n.d.); És mégis élünk … . (Canada, n.d.) and A város meg a sárkány (Zürich, n.d.).
Mária Szabó’s Felfelé is available in English: Upward (1928). K. Csathó’s works were published in 12 vols (1928).
Some of Zsolt Harsányi’s fictionalized biographies have been reprinted abroad: e.g. of Madách, Ember küzdj … (Vienna, 1970). In English: Hungarian Melody (1936. The latest reprint, with a different title, is Hungarian Rhapsody, Sydney,1958. In the USA it was published under a third title: Immortal Franz, N.Y:, 1937); The Star Gazer (N.Y., 1939, reprinted 1958); Through the Eyes of a Woman (N.Y.,1940) and Lover of Life (1942).
Both Dallos and Passuth are in print. The latter’s Esőisten siratja Mexikót is translated into English: Raingod Weeps Over Mexico (1948).
A modern selection of Lajos Harsányi’s poems was edited by G. Rónay: Toronyzene (1969).
Selected poems by Sík are to be found in Őszi fecske (1959), and his posthumous poems in Áldás (1964).
László Mécs: Összes versei (1941). A bilingual selection is Vadócba rózsát oltok–I Graft Roses on Eglantines (Toronto, 1968), with Paul Valéry’s introduction (1944) and a bibliography of his works. Aranygyapjú (Buffalo, N.Y., 1971) contains selection from his post–1945 poetry, with an excellent account of Mécs’s character assassination and his partial rehabilitation. The latest selection, Vissza a csendbe (Cleveland, 1976), is made by the author himself.
There is no selection from B. Horváth, except those referred to the in text, although a selection from his lifework would be essential for a more balanced view of his poetry. Béla Just has not been published in Hungary since 1945. His Gallows and the Cross first appeared in French. The Hungarian original (Miserere) is unpublished, except for excerpts in Látóhatár (1954).
Most of Zilahy’s works are in print, published in Yugoslavia; since his death his books have been published in Hungary (e.g. Valamit visz a víz! 1976). As the genesis and chronology of A Dukay család is rather confused, the following explanation may be useful. The first draft of the novel was published without the author’s consent in Hungary as Ararát (1947), then the second volume in English (The Dukays, N.Y., 1949). The second part of this latter was published in Hungarian as Krisztina és a király (London, 1953). The entire second volume was published under the title Rézmetszet alkonyat (Novi Sad, 1967); the title was originally used for the third part of volume two in the English edition. The third volume came out also in English first as The Angry Angel (1953) then in Hungarian as A dühödt angyal (Novi Sad, 1968). Volume 1 was first published in English as Century in Scarlet (1966) and later in Hungarian as Bibor évszázad (Novi Sad, 1968). Other novels in English: Two Prisoners (1931), The Deserter (1932) and The Guns Look Back (1938). A short story ‘The Last of John Kovács’ is in Hungaria (1936).
None of Körmendy’s works have been published in Hungary since 1947. In English: Escape to Life (1933), Via Bodenbach (1935), Adversary of Man (1941), The Happy Generation (1945), Weekday in June (1946), Sinners (1948), That One Mistake (1948) and others.
Földes has no recent Hungarian editions. In English: The Street of the Fishing Cat (1937) and many others.
Mihály Földi in English: The World Strides On (1937) and others.
Renée Erdős: Összegyűjtött munkái, 30 vols. (1931). There is a recent edition of Santerra biboros (Vienna, 1969).
Gábor Vaszary in English: Monpti (1937).
Jenő Rejtő is widely available. In English, The 14 Carat Roadster (Bp., 1967) and The Blonde Hurricane (Bp., 1965; 2nd ed. Bp., 1971).
Faludy’s collected poems (1980) were published in New York. His Villon balladái have been reissued several times. In English he published an autobiography: My Happy Days in Hell (1962), a novel Karoton (1966), and a selection from his poetry: East and West (Toronto, 1978).
