103Klára Hegyi and Pál Fodor: An unsuccessful Ottoman attempt at imposing taxes on subjects of Royal Hungary
(Summary)
Every third year the Ottoman financial administration in the provinces made general accounts of the collection of taxes which were assessed in advance. Such accounts included not only the taxes collected, but also those which were in arrears or for some reason were regarded as irrecoverable. The list published here probably dates from the late 1563 and registers those villages in Northern Hungary under Habsburg rule which in principle were incorporated in the sancak of Hatvan by the Ottomans but in reality could not be taxed during the year 970 ( 31. VIII. 1562.–20. VIII. 1563.). The attempt at gathering the poll-tax (cizye) in these villages failed because they were protected by important Hungarian strongholds such as Eger, Tokaj, Putnok, and Ónod. Other settlements situated farther away or in the vicinity of smaller fortifications generally could not defend themselves; they had to submit and deliver the imposed sums to the Ottomans.
