Finlay
Finlay (ejtsd: finle) György, angol történetiró és filhellén; szül. Fevershamban (Kent) 1799 dec. 21., megh. Athénban 1876 jan. 26. Glasgowban tanult; nemsokára azonban Byron lord lelkesedésétől elragadtatva, nagy hévvel közreműködött Görögország fölszabadítása érdekében. A szabadság kivivása után Athénbe költözött s élete fogytáig a Times levelezője és a londoni Athenaeum munkatársa maradt. Mint Byron benső barátja, a görög szabadság lelkes bajnoka s mint Görögország helyrajzának, művészetének és régiségeinek alapos ismerője, egész Európában nagy hirre tett szert. Görögország történetére vonatkozó művei közül megemlítendők: Remarks on the topography of Oropia and Diacria (Athén 1838; ném. Hoffmanntől: Historisch-topographische Abhandlungen über Attika c. a.
